X-Chair

ALMA architecture designed and built the X-Chair as part of the 'Take a Seat' program hosted by DesignPhiladelphia. Participants were challenged to use IKEA 'MARTIN' chair as a base for a unique design. The chairs were auctioned off to benefit year-round educational programming of the Center for Architecture.

TAKE A SEAT
"Take A Seat | A Silent Auction at PopUp Place 2013 This year, DesignPhiladelphia will be offering PopUp Place ticket holders the chance to bid in a contemporary art & design auction called Take A Seat. The auction will give design aficionados and collectors the chance to bid on works by 16 of the region’s hottest designers/design firms working across a variety of disciplines. Participating designers were given an identical chair, generously donated by 2013 Festival sponsor, IKEA, to transform. MARTIN, made of powder-coated steel and molded birch plywood, has a simplistic form which provided a starting point for our challenge. There was only one rule of engagement – the final result, either functional or purely aesthetic, must incorporate the given chair's component parts."
