The Simon Center’s transformation from a biology building to a vibrant hub for economics and policy studies at Lafayette College has created a dynamic learning environment. A new on-grade entrance makes it inviting and accessible to all. By converting the outdated structure into a modern, light-filled space, we’ve enhanced student collaboration and faculty productivity.
The 35,000 SF building includes 32 faculty offices, 10 classrooms, and various meeting spaces. The classrooms feature AV/IT systems, and dedicated labs facilitate state-of-the-art learning, including a Bloomberg Lab. Classroom sizes vary, and flexible furniture allows for easy reconfiguration. Meeting spaces are located throughout the four stories of the building, ranging from formal meeting rooms to informal collaboration areas in the center core.

Making an Entrance

Everyone can come through the front door. A new entrance on grade brings everyone in on the same level. Stairs or a lift can take you where you want to go. The curtain wall corner, a beacon of transparency, invites visitors and occupants alike to step inside and explore.

The framework was there; it just needed to be modified. We took small windows with splayed brick and made way for bigger windows to let light in and capture views to the outside. New, larger openings bring something extra to special spaces like collaborative areas at the end of a hallway. The openness invites you in.
